Understanding red Seal

Trade certification in Canada is a provincial responsibility, which means a certificate issued in one province does not automatically carry to another. The Red Seal is the agreed national standard that resolves this: pass the interprovincial examination for your trade and the endorsement goes on your certificate, and employers across the country recognize it without further testing.

For a manufacturer the practical consequences are in hiring and in apprenticeship. A Red Seal welder or machinist moving from Alberta to Prince Edward Island can work on arrival. Someone certified provincially without the endorsement may face a process first, which matters when you are recruiting into a tight labour market.

It also matters when deciding whether to take on apprentices. Provincial apprenticeship authorities set the ratios and the hours, federal and provincial incentives exist for employers and apprentices, and the Red Seal trades are where that support is concentrated.

In practice

When recruiting from another province, check for the endorsement rather than the certificate alone. It is the difference between someone starting next month and someone starting after a qualification process.

Frequently asked

Is the Red Seal required to work in a trade?

No. Provincial certification governs whether a trade can be practised, and some trades are compulsory while others are voluntary, varying by province. The Red Seal is about mobility between provinces rather than permission to work in one.
